Woman charged with assaulting police following incident at St. Thomas hospital

A 20-year-old Brantford woman is facing a charge of assaulting police following an incident Tuesday at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital, police said.

St. Thomas police officers were called to a location on Hamilton Street around 6 a.m. after receiving a report that a woman was attempting to enter a residence that was not hers, and refused to stop trying.

Officers took the woman into custody and placed her in a cell. While in the cell, police said the woman began to hit her head against the cell doors, injuring herself and requiring treatment in hospital.

As she was being treated in hospital, police allege the woman kicked, punched, and attempted to bite police officers, nurses, and hospital security, and spat in an officer’s face.

No further information about the incident has been released, and police said the woman was arrested on a charge of assaulting police after being released from hospital.

The accused has been released from custody with a future court date scheduled, police said.
