A lot of questions are now being asked by city councillors after a report commissioned over a year ago on the Ontario Works Hamilton office is finally in their hands.

It outlines a department that staffers say is plagued by low morale, non-existent communications, poor business practices and failure to meet provincial standards.

One of the questions is why this report didn’t see the light of day before Ward 5 Coun. Chad Collins had to insist that staff turn it over.

Ward 7 Coun. Donna Skelly says this report and the one earlier this week about the cost overruns for consultants, has made her very concerned.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

She says “for the most part council has trusted city managers to run their departments effectively, but we are finding more and more that isn’t the case.”

She adds “city manager Chris Murray has promised to get to the bottom of this and I hope he does because we need to run the city more efficiently.”

Skelly says in light of the two scathing reports this week alone, it may be time for council to start shining a spotlight on senior staff.
