Carrie Fisher to appear in final ‘Star Wars’ movie, late star’s brother confirms

The Star Wars saga will come to a conclusion in the upcoming Episode IX, and even though Princess Leia actress Carrie Fisher passed away before filming could take place, the iconic character will appear in the final installment.

Fisher’s brother, Todd Fisher, tells the New York Daily News that he and his sister’s daughter, Billie Lourd, have granted the studio the rights to use footage of the late star.

Unlike the recent Rogue One, which used CGI to create a young Episode IV-era Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin (portrayed by Peter Cushing, who died in 1994), there will reportedly be no CGI involved in the scenes involving Leia, which will utilize existing footage shot prior to her death in December 2016.

“Both of us were like, ‘Yes, how do you take her out of it?’ And the answer is you don’t,” Fisher told the Daily News.

“She’s as much a part of it as anything and I think her presence now is even more powerful than it was, like Obi Wan — when the sabre cuts him down he becomes more powerful,” Fisher said. “I feel like that’s what’s happened with Carrie. I think the legacy should continue. I’m not the only part in that equation, but I think the people deserve to have her. She’s owned by them.”

As he explains, he has complete faith that the filmmakers will “do great things” in concluding the saga.

“You don’t mess with this legacy,” he added. “It would be like rewriting the Bible. To me, ‘Star Wars’ is the holy grail of storytelling and lore and you can’t mess with it.”
