Some Kelowna residents peddled extra hard at a workout facility Sunday to help two different charities.
The spin-a-thon at the Capital News Centre saw about 12 participants who hopped onto stationary bikes for the third annual Tour de Okanagan spin-a-thon.
The fundraiser aims to raise money for Rally 4 Life, which benefits people in third world countries like Guatemala.
“We try and attract interest by doing these fun events but at the same time, we have a serious side to it by raising money for people in need,” said Jackie Jennings-Bates for the Rally4Life Foundation.
“When we were there recently, we were putting in stoves in the community. There’s a very high mortality rate due to pulmonary diseases from smoke in homes. They cook over open fire so there’s no ventilation. We were putting in safe stoves for them,” said Jenning-Bates.
The spin-a-thon will also benefit KidSport Kelowna, which helps families struggling financially to put their children through sports.
Carolyn Gillespie with KidSport Kelowna says that 170 families were sponsored through the program last year.
“We are excited that the community has come out to support us. We are able to give back to those kids so they can be active. No one should be sidelined. They should all play,” said Gillespie.
In previous years, the spin-a-thon has raised between $3,000 and $5,000.
Organizers hope to at least match if not exceed that total this year.
