SASKATOON – A family of six living just outside of Grandora, Saskatchewan had their home ravaged by fire leaving only a pile of rubble behind on New Year’s Day.
Around 3:50 p.m. Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services was dispatched to a possible fire south of Highway 14.
“We could see the smoke from quite a ways away from the actual fire scene once we arrived on scene there was lots of heavy black smoke and flames showing…basically on arrival we could see 2 of the 4 walls had already burned to the ground and the only portion of the home that hadn’t had any fire involvement was the garage it’s self simply because of the wind direction,” said Battalion Chief David Nahachewsky.

The family was able to get out safely before crews arrived.
Saskatoon and Delisle fire crews undertook a defensive strategy and had the blaze under control after an hour-and-a-half.
The community is doing everything it can to get this family back on their feet including setting up a trust fund.
“It’s very important that there will be support there and I’m sure there’s open arms that lots of people around will be available to help,” said family friend Michael Larson.
The initial damage of the fire is estimated at $300,000 and it is still unknown what caused the blaze. The provincial fire commissioner’s office is continuing to investigate.
The homeowner was still in shock today, although he did say the family plans to rebuild and stay in the community.
Grandora is approximately 15 km west of Saskatoon.
