CALGARY- A national fitness chain has snapped up a few Gold’s Gym locations in Calgary, but the takeover has led to some unexpected problems.
It turns out many Gold’s members are still fighting contract disputes with the gym, over cancellations and billing issues.
Cherrie Aichele cancelled her membership in September, giving them 30 days notice. She has a letter showing her account was closed, but has since been told she had to give 90 days notice and has been sent a new bill for $83.
Now that Gold’s has been sold to GoodLife Fitness, she’s worried the bill will go to collections.
The Better Business Bureau says the change in ownership is complicating the process.

“The cancellation is not clearly defined in the contract to the consumers understanding, they just don’t understand what it is,” says Sandra Crozier-McKee. “A lot of them follow the procedures as they understand them to be, and then Gold’s turns around and says ‘well they didn’t follow proper procedures.’”
The former owner of Gold’s Gym says he will deal with any outstanding complaints on a case-by-case basis and will give members the benefit of the doubt.
When Global News contacted the CEO of GoodLife Fitness, he said he wasn’t aware of the member issues and says there will be a different attitude in old Gold’s locations going forward.
Anyone with issues can try contacting GoodLife at 1-800-387-2524 or members@goodlifefitness.com, or Gold’s at 1-800-338-4653.
The Northgate Gold’s has not been sold and continues to operate independently under the Gold’s name.
It is also not connected with the contract problems in this story.
