CBE teacher charged with sexual assault

CALGARY – A teacher in the Calgary school system is facing sex assault charges.

Calgary police confirm to Global News that a teacher at a Calgary public school is facing charges of sexual interference with a child and sexual assault.

Police started investigating in early November, after receiving a tip that a female teacher in her 40s was allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old boy at her school. The woman was arrested on Tuesday, without incident.

To protect the identity of the student and another key witness in the case, police aren’t releasing the name of the accused or the school where she taught.

“The victim has been very cooperative with police throughout the investigation,” says S/Sgt. Kelly Campbell. “We don’t believe that there are any other victims in this case but we do encourage that if anyone does have any information regarding any sexual assaults to come forward.”

The Calgary Board of Education is notifying parents at the school, and suspended the teacher with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

There is also a critical incident team supporting students and staff at the school where the teacher worked.

The teacher has been released on promise to appear in court on Monday January 28th.

The Calgary Board of Education released a statement, saying (in part):
The CBE is co-operating fully with the police investigation. The police have advised they believe there is one alleged victim.

In a circumstance like this, the primary concern of the CBE is the safety of students. Given the nature of the alleged incident, the police are engaged and the teacher is immediately removed from the workplace pending the outcome of investigations.
