Inquest hears from mom who killed daughter

A Winnipeg woman convicted of killing her own two year old daughter is giving testimony at an inquest into the little girl’s death.

31 year old Nicole Redhead is serving a 12 year sentence for suffocating her daughter Jaylene to death at the Native Women’s transition centre in 2009.

She pleaded guilty to the crime, avoiding a trial. So this is really the first time we’ve heard her tell her story under oath.

In quiet, mostly one word answers Redhead has testified about regaining custody of her daughter from Child and Family Services after making progress on her cocaine addiction.

But when given more freedom by staff at the centre, she says she slipped back into her old ways. Redhead began using again, saying she knew she could do anything she wanted.

When asked how programming there helped her learn to care for Jaylene, she cried. Her lawyer asked court for a recess.

The inquest is seeking to find out how the little girl’s death happened and what could have been done to prevent it.
