RCMP spokeswoman Erin Odishaw says the promotion puts Patterson in charge of protocol, ceremonies and cadet behaviour at the academy.
The role has been vacant since a retirement in September.
Odishaw says the force came up with a short list of officers for the job and Patterson was selected as the best candidate.
