City council approves new Saskatoon Transit contract

A new contract between the city and Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 615, which represented unionized workers at Saskatoon Transit, is now official.

City council unanimously approved the contract at a special meeting on Thursday afternoon.

The agreement ends a four-year long dispute over wages and the group’s pension plan.

Ward 8 Coun. Sarina Gersher helped create the group Bus Riders of Saskatoon.

She says the vote is a step forward in the city’s long-term transit plan.

“Having been a rider affected by transit both two years ago and the work action, it’s great news today,” Gersher said.

“I am happy to have been part of this vote and I imagine riders and everybody in this city are pretty excited.”

The agreement lasts until the end March 2017, when bargaining could once again begin.
