A false alarm Thursday morning has prompted the West Kelowna fire department to issue a friendly reminder that people should have their furnace regularly maintained.
West Kelowna Fire Rescue was called to a residence in the 3500 block of Old Okanagan Highway at around 5:20 a.m. following reports of a possible structure fire.
“The residents had been awakened by working smoke alarms, that had detected a very light smoke accumulation in the home,” assistant fire chief, Darren Lee said.
He said the smoke was the result of dust.
“The source of the light smoke is believed to be an accumulation of dust in the home’s forced-air natural gas furnace, that caused a malfunction,” Lee said.
He said the incident should serve as a reminder to all residents to keep their furnaces maintained.
“With local temperatures dipping well below freezing, WKFR is reminding our customers to ensure that their heating appliances have been maintained in good working order by a professional HVAC contractor,” Lee said.
