Recently tabbed as the leader of the official opposition party at Montreal City Hall, Valérie Plante will look to become Montreal’s next mayor when voters decide on Nov. 5, 2017.

Plante has been a city councillor since 2013 and during her campaign she spoke of wanting to add a pink line to the Metro system. This addition could cost approximately $6 billion.

“It’s something we are going to talk with in my team,” Plante said. “Projet Montreal, we’ve always been very strong on offering options for Montrealers in terms of transport.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The proposed Metro line would run from downtown to Montreal North with stops beginning at Bonaventure and ending at Marie-Victorin. The additional line would look to help ease traffic on the green and orange lines.

The first step that Plante will take as a leader is to assemble her team in order to win the next election.

“We need to make sure that at this point we’re back as a team and ready to fight for the next election,” Plante said. “We’re already jumping, right in January, in election gear.”

Plante is confident she will be able beat out current Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre.

“I know I can take the challenge and I’m ready for it,” Plante said.

With Montreal celebrating its 375th anniversary next year, Plante’s campaign will coincide with the city’s birthday, which could present difficulties.

“There are challenges and we’re aware of that,” Plante said. “We need to show Montrealers that there’s another option. There’s an alternative, a fresh one, that has ideas.”
