Rally in Saskatoon for Syrian children

SASKATOON – The Islamic Association of Saskatchewan hosted a “March for the Children of Syria” this afternoon outside city hall.

While the civil war in Syria presses on, nearly 200 people rallied outside of city hall in support of the Syrian children living in fear and facing death.

Saskatonians weren’t alone, thousands around the world also marched together as part of an international peace demonstration that took place today.

Parents and kids chanted in unison, raising awareness for over 3,300 children killed in the Syrian revolution.

It’s been 20 months since the country’s uprising began in an effort to overthrow Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

The Islamic Association of Saskatchewan says civilized nations must raise more pressure on Al-Assad’s allies to force him out of Syria and encourage the nation to join the democratic world.

“He’s using the kids as simply an easy target to scare their parents and by this way, he’s trying to make sure people don’t fight him back,” said Ahmed Shoker chair of the Islamic Association of Saskatchewan.

To date, nearly 45-thousand Syrians have been killed and 406-thousand are now refugees.

Those rallying say they’re optimistic things will soon change, but until then they will keep their rally signs high to let the children of Syria know they have not been forgotten.

Almost two-hundred residents gathered at Saskatoon city hall to make sure Syrian children are never forgotten.
