27-year-old snowboarder dies on Whistler’s Blackcomb Mountain

A snowboarder is dead after being found unconscious and unresponsive on Blackcomb Mountain.

The 27-year-old man, who was identified as Matej Svana, was found near the Arthur’s Choice run. and

According to the BC Coroners Service, Matej was snowboarding at noon when he got separated from his friend, who quickly notified the ski patrol. Passing skiers found him shortly afterwards immersed in a snow pack.

The skiers were able to perform CPR before Blackcomb Ski Patrol arrived on scene at about 12:15 p.m. Crews continued CPR and brought in an AED defibrillator, but the snowboarder was pronounced dead at 1:17 p.m.

The BC Coroners and Whistler RCMP are continuing to investigate this death.

Svana, a native of Slovakia, had been living in Whistler.

This comes just three days after Whistler Blackcomb opened for the winter season.
