Grocery store staff reported receiving a phone call from a man demanding cash and prepaid credit cards. Staff were told that if his demands were not met, he would call in other people with guns and explosives to further press his demands.

The Safeway was evacuated as police arrived.

Officers restricted traffic and then conducted checks to make sure there was no cause for alarm. An explosives detection police dog unit also cleared the building.

“I can safely say, in this particular case, it was pretty evident right off the bat his story didn’t hold a lot of water,” Staff Sgt. Grant Obst said.

“The threat level is up high when you start talking about firearms and explosives, but through the conversation [with the suspect] it became pretty clear, pretty quickly that there was something up here.”

As of 2:30 p.m., traffic in the area was operating normally.

Police said the caller was using a phone number that has been the subject of fraudulent scams in the past.
