Close call as car crashes through Winnipeg bakery window

The Cottage Bakery is picking up the pieces following a car crashing through its front window Wednesday. Ali Esfahani

WINNIPEG —  A close call and a very unusual day at work for a Winnipeg bakery worker who was behind the counter when a car came crashing through the business’ front window Wednesday.

“Shock. The whole place was in ruins,” said Ali Esfahani, a bakery employee and son of the owners. “The worst thing is it was 10 minutes earlier people would have gotten run over.” Esfahani says the bizarre collision happened just after the line up for their lunch rush had dissipated.

It’s still not clear exactly what led to the vehicle crashing through the front of The Cottage Bakery at 1382 Pembina Highway. Esfahani is just grateful no one was badly hurt.

Esfahani was behind the counter at the time of the crash, and says he quickly scanned the crowd of about 40 people in the building for injuries.

“It looked like a war zone.”

He says insurance adjusters have already been on scene and his family hopes to have the business open again by the weekend.
