Funeral held in Montreal for murdered Mafia member Joe Di Maulo

MONTREAL – About 200 gathered at the Notre Dame du Mont Carmel Church in Montreal for the funeral of reputed mobster Joseph Di Maulo.

The victim of an apparent gangland-style shooting, he was, according to the National Parole Board, an influential member of the Montreal Mafia.

The hearse was preceded by five cars bearing large wreaths, one from Di Maulo’s sister, another from the Cotroni familly and another from Raynald Desjardins, a man charged with first-degree murder in the death of Salvatore Montagna.

After the service, Di Maulo’s daughters released several white doves.

On Sunday, November 4, Di Maulo was shot and killed in front of his home in Blainville, a Montreal suburb.

Who was Di Maulo?
Seventy-year-old Joseph Di Maulo was married to a sister of Raynald Desjardins, who authorities consider to be a major figure on the organized-crime scene.

Last year, he was alleged to have been part of a group that was trying to reach a consensus over who should assume control over the local mob.

In 2004, a National Parole Board decision allowed Vincenzo Di Maulo, older brother of the slain man, to be released on day parole.

In that decision, the board prohibited the brother from meeting with known criminals “related to the drug milieu and/or organized crime, including your brother Joe Di Maulo, who is known to be an influential member of the Montreal Mafia.”

Di Maulo prospered under the Cotroni clan in the 1970s and rose to such high levels that police were surprised when they learned he travelled to New York to take part in a vote over who would take charge of the Bonanno crime family in the U.S.
