A new campaign has kicked off at the University of New Brunswick to raise funds to enhance facilities and programs and provide students with financial support.

The “It Begins Here” campaign’s aim is to raise $110 million and was announced at the Fredericton and Saint John campuses Friday.

Half of the goal – $55 million – will go towards supporting internships, co-op placements and opportunities to study abroad, while also creating new experiential learning opportunities.

The other $55 million will go towards financial support for undergraduate and graduate students.

Robert Quartermain, the campaign’s co-chair, has donated $500,000 to fund the “Quartermain Earth Sciences Scholarships” and support in the development of the university’s Centre for Healthy Living.

He said the campaign will help to attract more students.

“By having this foundation for scholarship as well as improving on our facilities, we’ll be able to attract those students and build on the next generation of leaders and business people for our province and for our country,” said Quartermain.

The New Brunswick government also introduced the Tuition Access Bursary in April to provide free post-secondary tuition for low-income and middle-class families.
