Charges laid against Boyle RCMP constable after ASIRT investigation

EDMONTON – An Alberta Mountie faces five charges including aggravated assault after a motorist was injured in a shooting.

A government agency that investigates police says a constable allegedly fired his handgun on Sept. 23, 2011, after pulling over a man near the community of Boyle north of Edmonton.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says their nearly 14 month long investigation focused on Const. Jason Clace of the Boyle RCMP detachment.

RCMP say Clace and victim knew each other. The constable, who has four years of experience, is now on administrative duties, according to the RCMP. The RCMP is now reviewing his duty status in light of these charges.

“Every member of the RCMP, every day puts on their uniform with the spirit and intent to serve the public in the best possible way. No officer, and I can tell you this whole heartedly, no officer ever wishes to be in the position that our member is in now,” said Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan.
