Crime continues to be a problem in Vernon as a quarterly report shows an increase in criminal activity in the north Okanagan city.
Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP recorded a six per cent increase in criminal code cases this year compared to last year, according to the detachment’s policing activity report for July to September of 2016.

The report states property crime is up almost nine per cent, with a “noticeable” spike in reports of break-and-enters and theft from vehicles.
RCMP said people aren’t getting the message about not leaving valuables in their vehicle.

As for driving investigations involving alcohol, the report shows there’s been a nine-and-a-half per cent decrease.

This is despite having a 56 per cent increase in the amount of road safety check stops from the same period last year.
In September, municipal politicians in Vernon met with law enforcement to discuss safety after some high profile crimes raised questions about the level of crime in Vernon.

At the time, mayor Akbal Mund said he believes people feel pretty safe in the the community, adding the city was planning to maintain the status quo.
