Young man found dead following Halifax shooting

WATCH ABOVE: Police are investigating two shootings in Halifax that occurred less than 12 hours apart. A 21-year-old man was found dead near Clayton Park while a 29-year-old Bedford man was treated and released from hospital. Jennifer Grudic reports – Nov 13, 2016

A young man is dead following a shooting outside an apartment building on Washmill Lake Road in Halifax.

Police said they located the body of the 21-year-old after responding to several 911 calls about shots being fired at around 5 p.m. on Saturday. The victim has since been identified as Shakur Oshay Trevez Jefferies of Halifax.

The autopsy was conducted on Sunday and police say the medical examiner has ruled Shakur’s death a homicide.

On Saturday night the body could be seen lying on the ground underneath a tarp in the parking lot between two apartment buildings – 610 and 650 Washmill Lake Drive.

Carvel Clayton, 21, of Halifax has been charged with second-degree murder in relation to the incident. He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court on Monday.

Police arrested five male suspects in total on Saturday night. Three of them were questioned and released without any charges while the fourth, a 21-year-old man, had his parole revoked as a result of the incident and will be returned to the custody of Correctional Services.

Police said they do not believe this was a random act and that the suspects and the victim were known to each other.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are asking anyone with information related to this incident to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
