Duncan man killed after rock that fell from logging truck goes through windshield

A Duncan man was killed this morning in a freak accident involving a rock falling off a logging truck.

Around 9:30 this morning, the man was driving in his pick-up truck on Highway 18 near the Skutz Falls turn off near Lake Cowichan.

RCMP say two commercial logging trucks were traveling close to each other, heading eastbound, when a rock fell off the first logging truck. It bounced off the roadway and went into the windshield of the pick-up truck on the driver’s side.

The 52-year-old driver was seriously injured and was taken to hospital where he later died. Miraculously, his female passenger was not injured.

The driver of the logging truck did not stop at the scene, however, police believe the driver was unaware of their involvement.

Police and the commercial vehicle safety enforcement team are working to confirm the identity of the logging truck driver.
