Sousa, Pupatello expected to enter the Liberal leadership race

TORONTO – The race for the leadership job of the Ontario Liberal Party could be getting a little more crowded as Charles Sousa and former MP Sandra Pupatello are rumoured to be entering the race in the coming days.

Mississauga-South MPP Charles Sousa is holding a press conference on Saturday where according to a press release, he will make an “important announcement.”

The press release also refers to the current Minister of Citizenship and Immigration as MPP with no mention of his role in cabinet.

CP24 is reporting that he will announce his leadership intentions at the press conference.

Resigning a cabinet position has been a requirement for politicians seeking the leadership role.

Various reports are also suggesting that a former Liberal MPP may get into the race as well.

Former MPP and Windsor native Sandra Pupatello also has an announcement scheduled later this week. According to CBC and CP24, Pupatello will announce her intentions to run at Ryerson University Digital Media Zone on Thursday.

Current Finance Minister and also a Windsor native, Dwight Duncan, may have inadvertently let the news out in a tweet published early on Wednesday morning.

“It will be fun watching Hudak concede to Sandra and Harper concede to Justin at the next general elections,” Duncan tweeted.

Pupatello served in the Ontario legislature from 1995 to 2011 holding various cabinet positions including Minister of Community and Social Services, Minister of Education, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and Minister of International Trade and Investment.

She left Queen’s Park in 2011 and took a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The involvement of both Sousa and Pupatello would widen the race that already includes Kathleen Wynne and Glen Murray.
