A Greater Toronto Area paramedic who was credited with saving the life of a driver whose car caught on fire in the north end of the city early Thursday morning has changed his story.

Tas Mouhteros, who operates his own private paramedic business, said he was heading home early from a gig at the Mod Club on College Street around 1 a.m. when he noticed a vehicle on fire near the intersection of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue East.

“As I was proceeding through Yonge Street I noticed a vehicle right there with flames coming out of the hood at the right hand side,” Mouhteros said during an interview on Global News Thursday morning.

“I immediately called 911, I pulled my car 50 metres from the vehicle. Dispatch told me to see if there was anyone in the vehicle. I noticed there was a male in the driver’s side with the door wide open.”

Mouhteros said he yelled at the driver several times to get out of the vehicle but didn’t get a response.

“He didn’t seem to understand. [Then] he finally complied. As he got out, I asked him to come towards me. The whole front of the hood started to come on fire,” he said.

But Global News obtained surveillance footage that contradicted Mouhteros’ account of the events.

When confronted with video that showed the man did not appear to return to the vehicle Mouhteros was persistent.

But after 10 minutes, Mouhteros apologized.

“Okay, fine, when I saw him he was out of the vehicle but he came around back to the vehicle, he was walking back and forth,” he said.

“I’m sorry, I made a little error.”

Police said the driver of the vehicle was uninjured and was brought to 32 Division for the night. There’s no word yet if any charges will be laid.
