Fewer Albertans getting flu shots at AHS clinics as first cases reported

The number of Albertans getting flu shots at AHS clinics is down five per cent from this time last year, and it’s raising a flag at Alberta Health Services.

Flu shots have been available at clinics for a month now, and the first outbreaks of flu are now being reported.

Just over 78,000 Calgarians have visited AHS flu clinics, compared to 82,000 in 2011.

Every year over 4,000 Canadians die of the flu, which is why medical officials say getting the flu shot is important.

Still, AHS isn’t too worried just yet.

A growing number of people are getting their shots at pharmacy clinics.

“What we are seeing in Calgary are more partners that are helping us with the immunization program,” said Dr. Judy MacDonald with AHS. “So that can include pharmacists and physicians and we know that we’ve got over a hundred more partners than we did last year.”
