Students at St. Thomas High School in Pointe-Claire are making an extra effort for Remembrance Day this year.

Melanie Sleep’s leadership class, which encourages students to organize and take part in events, is participating for the first time in the No Stone Left Alone program at the National Field of Honour in Pointe-Claire.

The program involves putting a poppy by the gravestone of every veteran on Remembrance Day.

“Up until recently, I didn’t realize how much [Remembrance Day] actually affected me, both as a Canadian and as a person,” said Sydney Nantel, a Grade 11 student.

Organizers at the high school plan to transport students to the National Field of Honour in order to take part in the event.

At an assembly ceremony Wednesday, the students heard from Bruce Udle, a Korean War veteran who served in the Canadian Navy.

“When you go through a situation like that and you come back,” he said, “it makes you appreciate what you’ve got.”
