WINNIPEG — The past few days have been warm and sunny in Winnipeg and throughout the province. However, go back 30 years and it was a completely different landscape.
In 1986, Winnipeg was hit with one of the biggest snow storms in the city’s history.
On Nov. 7 Winnipeg received its first major snowfall of the season. The snowfall turned into a blizzard that lasted two days. It was the largest snowstorm to hit the city since 1935.
From Nov. 7 to Nov. 9, 35.8 cm of snow fell throughout the city (typically there is around 19.9 cm in the entire month of November).
This early storm caused the city to shut down as a massive snow clearing effort began. Flights were grounded, cars were stuck in snow banks and snowmobiles took over city streets.

Essential services such as hospitals were able to remain open and volunteers helped shuttle hospital staff back and forth on snowmobiles.
Historically, the biggest snow storms of the year have happened in March and April.
