While many rush to the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Show & Sale for the newest gear, experts are reminding them to pick up the safest gear.

The most important piece of equipment is a helmet, according to Royce Barlow, a snowmobile safety instructor and member of the Saskatchewan Snowmobile Association (SSA).

“When you put it on, and you turn your helmet, your skin should move a little bit to make sure it’s a proper fit,” Barlow said.

He also warned against purchasing secondhand helmets to avoid ones that may have been damaged in the past.

Paramedic and SSA member Leann Bisschop recommended the Tek Vest, which is worn like an adjustable life jacket and protects vital organs from injury while riding.

“If you get any hard hits at all, fall off your sled, hit the handle bars. It’s going to protect your chest, it’s going to protect some of your belly,” she said.

In 2014, there were 37 reported snowmobile collisions and 16 injuries in the province, according data from Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI).

The Saskatchewan Snowmobile Show & Sale runs until 5 p.m. CT on Sunday at Prairieland Park.
