Major carriers resume nighttime flights out of Penticton

On Thursday both Air Canada and West Jet resumed their nighttime service to the Penticton Regional Airport.

The major carriers stopped flying into or out of the airport at night, last weekend, after the height of trees near the runways became an issue.

The issue with trees near the runways being too tall was found in an audit so authorities made changes so that planes could safely clear the trees. However, that also meant the length of runway that aircraft were able to use was shortened.

Until the too tall trees could be dealt with, the major carriers stopped their overnight flights.

Transport Canada said the trees have now “been cleared.”

Air Canada said it had to cancel “several” flights as a result but provided other options for passengers.

“We were able to mitigate impact to customers by making some alternate arrangements during this time. We added additional capacity by adding extra flights or by [upgrading] to a larger aircraft and we also operated some flights into Kelowna (and provided ground transportation into Penticton from there). So while some flights to and from Penticton were cancelled, alternative arrangements were also made in the interim,” said spokesperson Debra Williams, in a statement.

West Jet said eight of their flights were “impacted” before the problem was solved.
