iPad Mini launch lacks the usual Apple frenzy

TORONTO – The usual frenzy associated with Apple product launches was noticeably absent on Friday as iPad Mini’s hit the shelves of Apple Stores around the world.

Small lineups could be seen at some of Apple’s international flagship stores, including Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York’s Fifth Avenue store, just days after the city was battered by Hurricane Sandy.

Toronto’s Eaton Centre store played host to a lineup of about 100 customers eager to get their hands on the latest addition to the technology giant’s mobile device lineup when the store opened their doors at 8 a.m.

The biggest lineups could be seen outside Apple stores in Tokyo and Seoul, with queues of over 100 customers lining the streets, according to a report by Reuters.

But a lack of evident lineups on opening day may not stop the iPad Mini from selling well.

Not even the impact of Hurricane Sandy on New York City could stop the Fifth Avenue Apple Store from selling out of the iPad Mini.

According to a report by Apple rumour blog Mac Rumours, all three models of the white Wi-Fi iPad Mini sold out in a little over an hour and black models sold out after two hours at the flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York.

The iPad Mini measures 7.9 inches on the diagonal, making it about half the size of the original iPad.

It’s slightly larger than other 7-inch competitor tablets from Amazon, Google and rival Samsung, and is expected to add fierce competition to the “tablet wars.”
