Calgary Fire Department charges owners of Mission rooming house after deadly fire

CALGARY – The Calgary Fire department has charged the owners of a rooming house in Mission, after a fatal fire earlier this year.

The fire in the 300 block of 25th Avenue SW killed 57-year-old Daniel McWha of Calgary.

Emergency crews received a call about a blaze around 9:30 p.m. on September 12th, 2012.

Firefighters rescued three men from the roof of the house, while a fourth managed to escape on his own.

However, McWha was found inside the house, unconscious in an upstairs bedroom.

He was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but later died.

The Calgary Fire Department has now charged the owners of the rooming house, Annop Bungay and Deepti Bungay, for numerous violations of the Fire Code.

The violations of the Fire Code include: failing to provide smoke alarms, failing to provide fire extinguishers, failing to post floor plans showing exits and failing to provide an interconnected smoke alarm system.

Both men face 12 charges each under the Safety Codes Act.

The penalty for a first offence (per charge under the Safety Codes Act) is a maximum fine of $15,000 and/or a maximum of six months in jail.

Both men are scheduled to appear in court on January 9, 2013.

McWha was the city’s 10th homicide of the year.

The death is considered a homicide based on the autopsy and investigation of the scene. The arson unit has determined that the blaze was deliberately set.
