Saskatoon firefighters deal with 2 apartment fires

Saskatoon firefighters had to deal with two fires in apartment buildings over the weekend.

The first fire happened Saturday afternoon at 219 Ave. N S.

Multiple calls were made to 911 of a fire on the third floor.

Crews from two fire halls arrived to find heavy smoke and flame coming from a balcony at the rear of the building.

An exterior attack was started and rescue crews entered the apartment building to ensure everyone had evacuated.

The blaze was brought under control in 25 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

A fire investigator determined the fire was caused by a barbecue that had been left on after cooking.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.

The second fire happened on Sunday afternoon at 606 Appleby Dr.

Crews from three fire halls were dispatched following multiple 911 calls reporting alarm bells ringing and heavy smoke in the building.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the front door.

The fire was traced to a dryer on the basement level which was quickly put out.

Everyone had evacuated the building and no injuries were reported.

A fire investigator has determined the cause to be accidental.

Damage is estimated at $4,000.
