The first firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the unit.

They were met by the people living there, who said everyone was out except for their small dog.

Crews started an aggressive attack and determined the fire was in the basement laundry area.

The blaze was contained to the dryer.

A search was made of the townhouse and the family dog was found unharmed hiding in a shelving unit.

The cause of the fire was due to dryer malfunction, although investigators said a build-up of lint may have been a contributing factor.

Damage is estimated at approximately $40,000.

Officials with the Saskatoon Fire Department are reminding everyone that cleaning the dryer lint trap after every load is important, along with periodic cleaning of the ducts.
