Baumgartner scheduled to face trial next September in Edmonton shootings

 EDMONTON – Travis Baumgartner, the trainee security guard accused of killing three co-workers and seriously injuring a fourth during a robbery on the University of Alberta campus, will go to trial in September 2013.

Crown prosecutor Tania Holland appeared in a Court of Queen’s Bench courtroom Friday morning and set a trial date of Sept, 9, 2013. The trial is expected to last three weeks, Holland told court.

Baumgartner, 21, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm for the incident June 15 at HUB Mall. He has not yet entered a plea.

Michelle Shegelski, 26, Brian Ilesic, 35, and Eddie Rejano, 39, were shot to death while delivering cash to bank machines. A fourth guard, Matthew Schuman, is recovering from his injuries.

Baumgartner appeared in-person Friday morning, slouched over in the prisoner’s box in his blue prison overalls.

In August, the Crown decided to proceed with a direct indictment, meaning Baumgartner’s case will go straight to trial without a preliminary hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to prosecute him.

A pre-trial conference has been set for Jan. 23.
