Mary Scott has been diagnosed with three different types of cancer – three separate times.

Her last diagnosis was a few years ago, when doctors found a cancer on her duodenum, the first part of the small intestine, making it all but impossible for her to swallow.

It forced her to quit her job as a logistics manager.

She couldn’t take oral medication and instead, needed injections.

Scott explained the shots aren’t covered in Canada and cost $1,200 a month, leaving her in dire need of help.

That’s where the On Rock Community Services food bank came in.

“I was so grateful,” she told Global News.

A year ago, in an effort to give back, Scott started knocking on doors in her Pointe-Claire neighbourhood to collect food during the month of October to give to On Rock.

She collected 25 boxes of food last year — her first effort in paying it forward — and helped feed hundreds of needy families.

This year, Scott said she hopes to fill 100 boxes by Halloween.
