Calgary police get new high-tech cameras in their cars

The Calgary Police Service has announced new high-tech digital video cameras will soon be installed inside 350 patrol cars.

The move comes on the heels of a three-year pilot project.

Cameras will automatically record when lights are activated, or if a police vehicle is in a collision.

In addition, officers will wear wireless microphones that have the ability to capture audio up to 1,000 feet away.

Police say the cameras will improve officer and public safety.

Footage captured by the cameras will be used during investigations or as evidence for Criminal and Civil proceedings.

CPS says 200 cameras will be installed inside police cruisers and the two HAWCS helicopters in 2012/2013.

The remaining 150 cameras will be installed throughout 2014.

Police chose the Panasonic Arbitrator 360 as the best camera model to suit their needs.

The cost of the program is approximately $2 million.
