TTC plans subway cell service, new uniforms

TORONTO – The Toronto Transit Commission is hoping to go forward with plans to install cell service in its subway stations and to update the uniforms worn by its workers.

Councillors on the TTC board will vote Wednesday on a deal that would see Broadcast Australia Pty Ltd. pay the commission $25 million over 20 years to install cell service in 61 stations. TTC officials say riders could expect to be able to use their mobile devices on subway platforms in about two years.

The TTC has also begun consulting with a group of employees to modernize uniforms, CEO Andy Byford told The Globe and Mail. He said the commission hopes to come up with uniforms that will “command respect.”

Byford added the new uniforms will likely be blue, not the maroon that about 5,000 TTC employees have been wearing since the early 1990s.

The TTC’s contract with its current uniform supplier ends next year and in 2014.
