The Prairie Spirit School Division is starting to remove all microwaves from their school’s hallways and classrooms in order to comply with an upcoming government safety guide, according to a division official.

A notice went out to parents last Thursday notifying them that microwaves would “no longer be available for student use” and apologizing for any inconvenience.

A school division spokesperson said in a statement that the move was in response to a “school fire safety guide” that was being created by the province.

“This guide states that microwaves can no longer be used and located in classrooms or hallways as this increases fire safety risks in schools,” the spokesperson said in the statement.

“Schools in Prairie Spirit School Division are in the process of complying with the directive from the Government of Saskatchewan.”

Microwaves will still be allowed in school staff rooms and kitchens, according to the spokesperson.
