Metro stations to get overhaul in bid to increase accessibility
WATCH ABOVE: On Tuesday, the city announced plans to have elevators installed in 14 Montreal metro stations by 2022. The goal is to make sure the entire metro network is fully accessible to people with reduced mobility by 2038. Tim Sargeant reports – Oct 11, 2016

The city has announced plans to invest $213 million to make Montreal’s metro system more universally accessible by 2022.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre made the announcement at a press conference Tuesday morning, alongside Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) president Philippe Schnobb.

“In 2015, we made a commitment, as an organization, to improve our clientele’s experience in regards to their daily commute, and necessarily, that entails better accessibility to our subway system,” Schnobb said in a written statement.

There are currently 10 stations equipped with elevators. The hope is to bump that number up to 31 by 2022 and have the whole network retrofitted with elevators by 2038.
