A unique birthday gift gave Halifax’s Assistant Deputy Returning Officer Lori McKinnon the extra kick she needed in the last few weeks of the municipal elections.
McKinnon is known around the elections head quarters as a dedicated member of the team.
“She’s lovely and amazing and is dedicated to the electoral process,” returning officer Kevin Arjoon said about McKinnon.

With election-day preparations ticking into high gear in September, the small team at the Burnside office surprised McKinnon with a gift that was just the right fit.
McKinnon got custom-designed Chuck Taylors shipped in from the United States. Emblazoned on the side of each white shoe was a Halifax Votes 2016 logo.

“It was the best surprise on my birthday here, it was awesome,” McKinnon said. “I squealed, I squealed like a young child.”
The shoes were the perfect gift for McKinnon who traded in her four-inch heels from the last election for more comfortable shoes in the last few years.
Some people might not want to be so closely tied to their job, but not McKinnon, who describes her approach to work as “all-in.”
“It’s passion about the electoral process,” she said. “Everybody who’s involved in elections in this office, it’s total commitment. And its about being an advocate for the process and an advocate for the voter as best we can.”
“Its all consuming and I welcome it.”
The municipal and school board elections are on Oct. 15. Polls will be open across the municipality between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Voters can also cast their ballots online and by telephone.
