12-year-old boy charged in Shamattawa First Nation fire

A 12-year-old boy has been charged with arson in connection to the fire that destroyed a band office and only grocery store in Shamattawa First Nation.

Six children are believed to have been involved in the fire, set on Sept. 22.

Five of the children are under the age of 12, so they cannot be charged.

The First Nation declared a state of emergency after the fire destroyed the Northern Store, owned by the North West Company, and left the community of 1,500 without supplies or emergency services.

The community is roughly 750 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
