A world famous Canadian Ojibwa artist has died.
Daphne Odjig resided in Kelowna where she played a large role in leading First Nations painters into the mainstream of Canadian art.
Her work, which blended the influences of Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh has appeared in galleries around the world.
She and her late husband opened the first Canadian art gallery dedicated to First Nations.
Odjig also received the Order of Canada and an eagle feather from the chief of the reserve she was born on. This is an honour formerly given only to great warriors and hunters.
In 2007, she was the winner of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts.
She also was the subject of a solo exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in 2009.
Odjig passed away Saturday in Kelowna, B.C.
