Smart Betty comes to the rescue

An Okanagan based discount coupon company has come to the rescue of local merchants who’ve lost thousands of dollars to Gosango.

Gosango closed its doors last month leaving some merchants being owed as much as $8,000. But those merchants might get their money back now that Smart Betty has come forward.

The discount coupon company says it has just finalized a deal to buy Gosango’s assets.

“They were dead when they came to us asking to buy their assets,” says Smart Betty owner, Bruce Maki.

As part of the deal, Maki says the purchase money was held in escrow and earmarked for the merchants who are owed money.

“We did not buy the corporate entity — historical operations,” says Maki.

The online coupon industry has undergone some major consolidation in recent months. Maki says the industry has gone from more than 10,000 companies to just 600.
