Edmonton’s Hate Crimes Unit searches for church vandals

Half a dozen churches on Edmonton’s south side were damaged early Sunday morning.

The Hate Crimes Unit is asking for the public’s help in finding the people responsible.

“We’re in the preliminary stages of the investigation right now. We’re trying to piece together this puzzle, and we don’t have any suspect information, that information could potentially be out there in the public,” said Constable Alex Thomas with the Hate Crimes Unit.

One church has suffered $28 thousand in damage.

The Hate Crimes Unit investigates any crimes to religious institutions. The unit is still not sure if these acts of vandalism are hate related.

“Part of the things that we need to know is the motivation behind the attacks, the mischief’s, the criminal offence. So, once we can determine that it is hate related then Hate Crimes Unit will continue with that investigation,” added Thomas.

Police are asking the public to report any suspicious persons. If anyone has information, they are asked to call the complaints line at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or on-line at http://www.tipsubmit.com/start.htm.
