Telus cuts $35 activation fee for new customers; but adds $10 SIM card fee

VANCOUVER – Telus (TSX:T) is getting rid of some costly fees for its wireless customers.

The Vancouver-based carrier says it’s no longer charging a $35 activation fee for new wireless customers, or a $25 equipment exchange fee for renewing customers who purchase a new device.

But Telus says it will begin charging consumers $10 on Nov. 1 for new SIM cards to cover the product cost previously included in renewal and activation fees.

Telus says a new SIM card – which will allow devices to work on the Telus network – is only required when customers don’t have a compatible Telus SIM card.

The CRTC is asking Canadians for help to develop a national retail code that would cover smartphones and tablets to make contracts less confusing.

Telus and other wireless carriers such as Rogers (TSX:RCI.B), Bell (TSX:BCE) and new player Wind Mobile all say they support a national code for consumers.
