Anthropologie opens Montreal store in October

After a year of delays, Anthropologie, the American retail chain, opens its Montreal store on Friday, Oct. 12.

And it is spectacular: three storeys of its retro-romantic clothes and home decor, presided over by a giant moose. The floors are rough-hewn wood, and there are nooks and crannies everywhere with eclectic offerings.

Housed in a handsome historic greystone on de la Montagne St., the store has 6,500 square feet of selling space.

It will stock Anthropologie in-house brands, as well as labels like AG for jeans and its Tracy Reese Made in Kind floral, flirty dresses.

Among local offerings are Claire Desjardins’s accessories and paintings, La Raffinerie’s jewelry and Norwegian Wood accessories.

Not to be forgotten: shoes, scarves and handbags.

Among the offerings seen in a quick sneak peek of the shop Wednesday: beaded clutches, collars and ballet flats, brightly painted pottery, etched glassware and a giant coffee table of found Thai wood.

The chain has attracted a cult following since its early days.

Founded in 1992, it launched online sales in 1998, pioneering a do-it-yourself, individual style aesthetic.

It’s mix of combat boots and peasant skirts, chunky chokers, cookbooks and pottery draw a wide clientele to its stores and website.

Anthropologie announced the Montreal store in July 2011, with opening slated for October of that year.

This was pushed back to Nov. 25, then there was no news at all for most of this year.

“We’re perfectionists – we took our time so that the store would be exquisite down to the very last detail,” public-relations manager Amanda Woodward said in an email.

Anthropologie operates 175 stores worldwide. It is a division of Urban Outfitters Inc., which operates the namesake chain, BHLDN, Free People and Terrain.

The Montreal store opens its doors Friday, Oct. 12 at 10 a.m. at 2130 de la Montagne St.
