43 vehicles impounded for excessive speeding over the long weekend

Two cars were impounded for allegedly racing through the Cassiar Tunnel on Highway 1 on Thanksgiving Monday.

At about 1:40 a.m. the RCMP’s Port Mann Freeway Patrol Traffic Service attempted the stop the three vehicles, clocked at driving 139 km/hr in the posted 70 km/hr zone.

Police pulled over two of the drivers, who were 21 and 22 years old.

They were driving a 2008 Infiniti G37 and a 2009 Honda Accord. They were given $483 speeding tickets.

“The drivers were also given an immediate 15-day driver’s license suspension and had their vehicles impounded for seven days,” said Sergeant Peter Thiessen, spokesperson for the RCMP in the Lower Mainland. “We are concerned about yet another example of young male drivers continuing to engage in high risk driving behaviour.”

Police said they did not pursue a Scion that was also involved in the incident, due to concerns for public safety.
