The first trailer for Passengers, the much-anticipated sci-fi love story co-starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, dropped on Tuesday, complete with a futuristic spaceship and a bit of romance.
The drama from director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) and writer John Spaihts takes place on a spacecraft transporting thousands of people (in suspended animation) to a distant colony planet. The trip takes a deadly turn when Jim and Aurora’s (Pratt and Lawrence) hibernation pods awaken them 90 years before anyone else.
As Jim and Aurora investigate the malfunction together, they fall deeply in love. But the ship is collapsing and the two soon learn why they were mysteriously woken up.

“It’s just one of those stories that really grabs you,” Tyldum told EW. “The script was so smart and funny and clever and it was such a page turner, I couldn’t put it down.”
The script has been fascinating Hollywood since it was included on the 2007 Black List, the annual list of the most-liked and still-unproduced screenplays.
Tyldum became attached after Sony won rights to the Spaihts script in a competitive auction in December 2014, and it was a major material buy for the company after the big Sony hack.
By June 2015, Lawrence and Pratt joined the estimated $100 million production.
“It’s perfection,” Lawrence said. “After reading it I thought I can’t not do this movie because it is so good.”
“I just thought if this movie gets made with the two of us, with this story and with this director and we can execute this well, I really think it’s going to be one of the greatest, most original and compelling epic movies I’ve seen… maybe ever!” Pratt said.
Tyldum also said, “Every generation has a big love story — I feel like this is it.”
