Some students at the University of British Columbia are criticizing the school after a notorious pick-up artist was spotted on campus.

Jan Huang is a self-styled dating coach who promises to teach clients how to have success with the opposite sex, but some say his tactics are predatory and his visit was ill-timed since the school has come under fire from critics who say it isn’t taking the problem of sexual assaults on campus seriously enough.

Huang runs boot camps that teach men his questionable tactics for meeting women. He recently filmed a video at UBC’s Point Grey campus and was spotted there last week coaching five male clients.

“I thought I’d take them to school…and show them how to actually meet girls on campus, how to approach and talk to girls whether you’re in class or whether you’re walking to class,” he said. “If you see a cute girl that you like, just go and talk to her.”

Global News spoke to several women on campus who expressed concerns about Huang, with one woman saying he “should definitely be monitored, especially because UBC is putting out all these blasts about safety on campus.”

Complaints were also sent to UBC President Santa Ono via Twitter.

Campus officials said that Huang’s actions may be distasteful, but they are not illegal so there is nothing the university can do to keep him away.

As for Huang, he said he will be back.

“Why not?” he said. “I’m free to go wherever I want. I’m not doing anything wrong. I’m not committing any crimes. I’m not hurting anybody.”

The university is encouraging anyone who feels unsafe or threatened by Huang’s behaviour to file a complaint with campus security.
