Graffiti makeover in Saskatoon

A group of local graffiti artists spent a portion of their Thanksgiving weekend spray painting murals to cover up tags in Saskatoon.

Graffiti artist Sam Forsyth was hired by the city to paint murals in pedestrian walkways around the Confederation area.

The city hope is to deter bad graffiti with good graffiti.

“We need to have actual graffiti pieces in there to make the connection with the vandals, otherwise they’ll just look at it as another mural and it will get tagged over,” said Forsyth.

This isn’t the first time the city has used this kind of initiative, electrical boxes have been painted.

City councillor Miles Heidt says graffiti is graffiti and does not back this initiative.

In Saskatoon, anyone caught vandalizing public or private property can be charged with mischief by wilful damage.

Forsyth says he’s hopeful his murals will stay vandal free and would jump at the chance to paint other locations.
